Best Time for the Ride

According to the local experts of AndamanTourism.org, the best time for a Glass Bottom Boat Ride in Andaman depends on factors like weather, marine visibility and your personal preferences. Here’s how to choose the ideal time:

1. Weather Considerations

Dry Season (October to May): This is the best time for the ride as the weather is clear, and the sea is calm, ensuring excellent visibility. The months between November and April are especially favorable for outdoor activities like this.

Monsoon Season (June to September): It’s not ideal to take a boat ride during the monsoon, as the seas can be rough, and visibility underwater can be low due to rainfall. Boat services may also be suspended for safety reasons.

2. Time of Day

Morning (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM): The sea tends to be calmer in the morning, and the water is usually clearer for viewing marine life. This is the best time for a ride if you want smooth seas and optimal visibility.

Late Afternoon (3:00 PM – 5:00 PM): While the water might be slightly choppier in the afternoon, the temperature is more comfortable after the sun has lessened its intensity. The light also offers unique photo opportunities with the golden hour.

3. Weekdays vs. Weekends

Weekdays: If possible, opt for weekdays when the area is less crowded. This ensures a more peaceful and personal experience without the hustle and bustle of weekend tourists.

Weekends: Weekends can be busier, especially at popular spots like Havelock Island and North Bay. However, they offer a vibrant atmosphere with more people around, which some visitors may enjoy.

4. Avoiding Peak Season Crowds

Off-Peak Seasons (October and May): The islands are less crowded just before or after the peak tourist season (November to April), which can make for a more peaceful experience and better availability of boat rides.

Choosing the right time based on these factors will enhance your experience, making it more enjoyable and memorable.

It is a popular hobby for nature enthusiasts, marine lovers and collectors. Shell collecting typically happens on beaches, tidal zones, and rocky shores where shells wash ashore or accumulate.

The collected shells can range from small, simple ones to large, intricate and brightly coloured shells, showcasing the diversity of marine life. Shell collecting in the Andaman Islands can be an enjoyable activity, but it is important to follow local guidelines to protect the fragile marine ecosystem.

But what does shell collecting entail! Let us also see what types of shells the tourists who visit the beaches get attracted to and are usually collected. The major types of shells collected can be identified as:

Gastropod Shells: Spiral-shaped shells, such as conches and whelks.

Shells are collected for various reasons. Some of the reasons can be identified as follows:

Hobby: Collectors enjoy the aesthetic appeal of shells, using them as keepsakes or decorative items.

Education: Studying shells provides insight into marine biology and mollusc
behaviour.

Scientific Research: Shells can indicate the health of marine ecosystems and help researchers study mollusc evolution and distribution.

Do’s of Shell Collection in Andaman

Collect Responsibly: Only collect shells that are empty and have no living organisms inside them. Ensure they are not being used as a habitat by marine creatures.

Research Regulations: Check local rules and permissions for shell collecting. Certain areas may prohibit the collection of shells to protect biodiversity.

Stick to Designated Areas: Collect shells only from beaches where this activity is explicitly allowed.

Inspect for Inhabitants: Double-check shells for living creatures before collecting. Hermit crabs and other small organisms often inhabit shells.

Clean the Shells: If permitted to collect, rinse the shells thoroughly to remove sand and debris.

Respect Conservation Efforts: Be mindful of ongoing conservation projects and adhere to the guidelines set by authorities to preserve marine ecosystems.

Don’ts of Shell Collection in Andaman

Avoid Live Shells: Never collect shells that contain live animals or organisms, such as snails, crabs or corals.

Do Not Disturb Ecosystems: Avoid damaging coral reefs or disturbing natural habitats while searching for shells.

No Large-Scale Collecting: Do not collect shells in bulk or for commercial purposes. This can disrupt the ecological balance and is illegal in many areas.

Refrain from Breaking Rules: Avoid collecting shells in protected areas such as national parks or wildlife sanctuaries, where all natural resources are safeguarded.

No Export Without Permission: Do not take shells out of the Andaman Islands or export them without obtaining the required permissions from authorities.

Avoid Cleaning with Chemicals: Do not use harmful chemicals or bleach to clean shells, as it can harm the environment.

Environmental Considerations

While shell collecting can be an enjoyable activity, it has environmental implications. Many shells serve as homes or shelters for marine creatures, and removing them can disrupt ecosystems. For this reason, responsible and sustainable practices are critical when engaging in this activity.

Key Environmental Concerns Associated with Shell Collection

Habitat Destruction:

Shells serve as shelters and homes for marine organisms like hermit crabs, small fish and algae. Removing shells from beaches and reefs disrupts their habitats.

Disruption of Ecosystem Services:

Shells contribute to beach stabilization and prevent coastal erosion. Excessive shell removal can weaken these natural defences.

Threat to Endangered Species:

Certain mollusc species, such as conch and nautilus, are endangered. Collecting their shells can further threaten their populations.

Impact on Coral Reefs:

Shell collection in reef areas can lead to physical damage to corals, which are already vulnerable due to climate change and human activities.

Overharvesting:

Commercial-scale shell collection for souvenirs or trade depletes natural reserves, affecting the ecological balance.

Violation of Conservation Laws:

Many areas in the Andaman Islands are protected under laws that restrict the collection of shells and other marine resources to preserve biodiversity.

How Can you Practice Responsible Shell Collection

Follow Regulations: Collect shells only in permitted areas and adhere to local and national laws.

Avoid Collecting Live Shells: Ensure that the shells you collect are empty and not inhabited by marine creatures.

Support Conservation Efforts: Choose eco-friendly souvenirs and contribute to conservation initiatives in the region.

Limit Collection: Take only a small number of shells as keepsakes to avoid depleting natural resources.

Educate Yourself: Learn about the ecological significance of shells and the importance of preserving marine biodiversity.

Participate in Eco-Tourism: Join guided tours and activities that promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

By respecting these environmental considerations, tourists and locals can help protect the rich biodiversity of the Andaman Islands while still enjoying the beauty and allure of its natural treasures.

Tips for Responsible Shell Collecting in Andaman

Only collect empty shells that do not house any living organisms.

Avoid collecting shells in large quantities or from protected areas.

Clean and inspect shells for marine life before taking them.

Respect local rules and conservation efforts to preserve the biodiversity of the region.

By collecting responsibly, you can enjoy the beauty of Andaman’s marine life while protecting and actively participating in conserving its fragile and precious ecosystem.

Conclusion

While shell collecting can be a memorable experience, always prioritize the environment and adhere to local regulations to ensure sustainable tourism in the Andaman Islands. When in doubt, consult local guides or authorities.

Underwater Photography as an Art

Underwater photography is a specialized type of photography that involves capturing images beneath the surface of water. It requires specialized equipment and techniques to deal with the unique challenges of shooting in an aquatic environment. This genre is widely used in documenting marine life, capturing underwater landscapes, or creating artistic images.

The subjects of underwater photography are usually marine creatures like fish, turtles, dolphins and coral reefs. Also, the underwater landscapes, including shipwrecks, caves and sea beds are attractive choices. Human activity, such as divers, swimmers or models posing underwater also make for nice pictures to be carried back as memories by tourists and travellers.

Waterproof cameras or regular cameras in waterproof housings have to be used. The lenses should be optimized for underwater use such as wide-angle and macro lenses are common. Artificial lighting like strobes or underwater flashlights are generally used to deal with light loss and colour distortion. Getting close to the subject to reduce the distortion caused by water is a major technique to get flawless photographs underwater. Using a wide-angle lens for broad scenes and a macro lens for close-up details helps getting nice clicks.

During underwater photography it must be remembered that limited natural light is present as the depth of water increases. Water is also known to absorb red and yellow light, making scenes appear blue-green. Maintaining buoyancy while composing shots is also important for striking photos.

Suggested Read : Andaman tour packages

Among all the types of underwater photography, Andaman is specifically known for wildlife photography. The marine species and their behaviour in their natural habitat make for priceless photography. Wreck photography which documents shipwrecks and underwater ruins are clicked or underwater portraits involving capturing divers, swimmers or models in creative underwater settings are other types. Abstract and artistic photography focuses on patterns, colours and reflections underwater to create abstract art. Scientific photography is used for research purposes, such as documenting coral bleaching or marine biodiversity.

Underwater photography is used for marine research to study aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity and for creating conservation awareness that highlights issues like coral bleaching or plastic pollution. It is also used for advertisements, movies or exhibitions. Scuba divers or snorkelers document their experiences through underwater photography.

Among the most popular locations for underwater photography, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is notable for their coral reefs and marine diversity. Other popular haunts are the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Raja Ampat in Indonesia, the Red Sea in Egypt and the Maldives and Hawaii. Underwater photography offers a fascinating perspective on the hidden world beneath the waves, blending art with adventure!

Vibrant Coral Reefs: The Andaman Islands are home to extensive coral gardens teeming with life. These natural formations provide stunning backdrops for underwater portraits. Hard and soft corals, such as table corals, brain corals, and sea fans, add vibrant colours and textures to photographs.

Rich Marine Life: Swimming with exotic marine species like clownfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and even small reef sharks enhances the visual appeal. Posing with schools of fish creates dynamic, action-packed shots.

Crystal-Clear Waters: The islands offer excellent underwater visibility, especially at popular diving spots like Havelock Island (Elephant Beach), Neil Island, and Jolly Buoy Island. Clear water ensures bright, sharp images and vibrant colours.

Neil Island: With its serene waters and rich marine ecosystems, this is an excellent location for professional underwater shoots.

North Bay Island: Known for water activities like sea walking, this location allows easy posing near corals while being surrounded by fish.
Photography Tips for Underwater Coral and Fish Posing

Use a Waterproof Camera or Housing: Cameras like GoPro or DSLR with underwater housing are ideal for high-quality shots. Ensure your equipment is rated for the depth you’ll be diving/snorkelling.

Master Neutral Buoyancy: For scuba divers, controlling buoyancy ensures stability while posing and avoids disturbing marine life or corals.

Get Close to the Subject: Water reduces colour and sharpness, so get as close as possible to your subject without harming corals or marine life.

Lighting: Use natural sunlight in shallow waters or bring an underwater strobe/flash to bring out true colours at greater depths.

Pose Naturally: Floating freely, interacting with fish, or gently reaching toward corals adds life to the photographs. Avoid touching or leaning on corals to preserve their health.

Frame Dynamically: Incorporate elements like a school of fish, coral arches, or sea fans for an engaging composition. Also, experiment with angles. Capture shots from below to highlight the subject against the water’s surface or use side angles to frame coral gardens.

Avoid Touching Corals: Corals are delicate and can be damaged by contact. Maintain a safe distance while posing.

Respect Marine Life: Avoid chasing or startling fish. Let them approach naturally for better and more ethical shots.

Use Eco-Friendly Sunscreen: Ensure your sunscreen is reef-safe to prevent harming the delicate underwater ecosystem.

Why Should You Stay in the Eco Huts of Andaman

Eco huts in the Andaman Islands are designed to offer a sustainable, rustic, yet comfortable stay that brings guests close to nature. These huts have some key features that help them get categorized as eco-friendly accommodations.

1. Sustainable Materials

Most of these eco huts are built using local and sustainable materials, such as bamboo, coconut wood, palm leaves and other renewable resources. This helps blend the huts seamlessly into the natural environment while minimizing the carbon footprint associated with construction.

2. Open and Natural Design

Eco huts often have open designs that allow natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. Windows and skylights are strategically placed to enhance airflow, keeping the hut cool even in the tropical climate. The open layout also allows guests to experience the surrounding sounds of nature.

3. Minimalist Interiors

The interiors of eco huts usually emphasize simplicity and minimalism. The furniture may be crafted from natural wood or bamboo, providing basic comforts without excessive decorations. This minimal approach aligns with the eco-friendly philosophy, encouraging the visitors to embrace a simpler lifestyle while being in the heart of nature.

4. Composting Toilets and Water Conservation

Eco huts sometimes use composting toilets to conserve water and reduce waste. Rainwater harvesting systems or low-flow faucets may also be used to minimize water usage, as fresh water is a precious resource in remote locations like the Andaman Islands.

5. Solar Power and Renewable Energy

Many eco huts rely on solar power or other renewable energy sources for electricity. This setup often includes solar-powered lighting and water heaters. By using clean energy, these huts reduce their impact on the environment, which is especially important in an ecologically sensitive area like the Andamans.

6. Recycling and Waste Management

Eco-conscious accommodations usually encourage responsible waste management practices, including recycling and composting. Some eco resorts provide separate bins for organic and recyclable waste or encourage guests to avoid single-use plastics to protect the local environment.

7. Organic Gardens and Farm-to-Table Dining

Some eco resorts in the Andamans grow their own organic produce to support sustainable dining. Guests can enjoy farm-to-table meals made from locally sourced ingredients, enhancing the experience of living in harmony with nature.

8. Wildlife-Friendly Practices

To respect the local wildlife, eco huts often follow strict guidelines on waste disposal, lighting and noise levels. This ensures that the native flora and fauna remain undisturbed, allowing guests to observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

9. Immersive Nature Experience

Eco huts are often located in remote areas, surrounded by lush greenery, forests or near pristine beaches. This gives guests the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in nature, away from the noise and distractions of urban life. Activities like birdwatching, snorkelling and nature walks are often part of the eco-hut experience.

These features make eco huts an ideal option for travellers who want to experience the beauty of the Andaman Islands in a responsible and environmentally friendly way. Staying in an eco hut allows guests to connect deeply with nature, enjoy a simpler lifestyle and contribute to sustainable tourism practices that help preserve the islands for future generations.
