From Port Blair, a road transfer to Diglipur takes approximately 5 to 6 hours through the North Andaman Highway, passing through dense forest, mangroves, and small island settlements. Arrive Diglipur by late afternoon. Check into your hotel. Dinner and rest. This is a travel-heavy day; pack snacks and carry cash as options are limited on the highway. Overnight Diglipur.

The early hours matter most in Diglipur. Why Diglipur Is the Most Underrated Part of Any Andaman Trip?

Every standard Andaman package stops at Havelock. Nine out of ten travellers who visit the Andamans never go north of Port Blair. Diglipur, the northernmost town in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is a 5 to 6 hour road journey from Port Blair, and that drive alone stops most itineraries from including it. That is also exactly why Diglipur is worth going to.

Ross and Smith Islands, connected by that 450-metre sandbar, are among the most photographed places in the Andamans, yet on any given morning in the high season you will share the sandbar with perhaps a dozen other visitors. The logistics filter out casual tourists. You need to be at Aerial Bay Jetty by 7:00 AM, carry a Forest Department permit obtained on arrival at the jetty, and take the government ferry across. None of that is difficult, but it is enough of a barrier that the islands stay quiet.

The sandbar itself behaves differently through the day. At low tide you can walk its full length with water on both sides, ankle-deep, warm, and completely still. At high tide the water rises over sections of the sandbar and the crossing becomes a wade rather than a walk. The light at this latitude in the early morning is also noticeably different from Havelock: cooler, clearer, with longer shadows. Photographers who have shot both islands consistently prefer Diglipur for the quality of morning light.

Kalipur Beach, 30 minutes from Diglipur town, is one of the few places in the world where four species of sea turtle come to nest on the same beach. Olive ridley, green, hawksbill, and leatherback turtles arrive between November and March. The Forest Department runs a hatchery at Kalipur and organises night watches during nesting season. If your 9-day trip falls between November and March, this is among the best wildlife experiences available anywhere in India.

There is one honest caveat. Day 8 is a heavy travel day: an early ferry from Havelock to Port Blair, then a 5 to 6 hour road transfer to Diglipur. And Day 9 requires leaving Diglipur by noon at the latest to reach Port Blair airport in time for an evening flight. If that feels like too much, the alternative is to swap Diglipur for a third full day on Havelock, spending the extra night at a luxury resort and doing the Havelock sunset properly without any time pressure.
