What Baratang Actually Involves (And Why Most Itineraries Skip It)

Baratang Island appears on many Andaman tour operators’ websites and on very few actual itineraries. The reason is the 3:30 AM departure. Almost no one wants to wake up at 3:00 AM on holiday. On a packed 7 or 9-day schedule, the idea of losing a full day to a trip that starts before dawn and returns by evening is unappealing. On a 10-day trip, with three nights in Port Blair, it fits. Day 3 is the day for Baratang, and there is no island to reach, no ferry to catch, and no hotel to check out of.

The trip itself is unlike anything else in the Andamans. Vehicles from Port Blair gather at a checkpoint before entering the Jarawa Tribal Reserve and travel through in a police-escorted convoy. Photography inside the reserve is prohibited by law. The Jarawa are a protected indigenous community with no contact with the outside world; the convoy rule exists to minimise disruption. The drive through the reserve, with dense forest on either side and no mobile signal, takes about an hour and is strange and quiet in a way that stays with you.

At Baratang Jetty, you board a speed boat through mangrove creeks so narrow that branches brush the roof of the boat. The journey to the limestone caves takes 25 to 30 minutes. The caves themselves are not like the dramatic caverns of Meghalaya or Chhattisgarh; they are smaller, white rock formations built over centuries by dripping water and coral deposits, and the setting inside the forest makes them feel genuinely remote. The mud volcano nearby is a curiosity rather than a spectacle, but it is the only accessible mud volcano in the Andamans and worth the detour.

The full trip from Port Blair and back covers approximately 12 hours. You return tired but with something most Andaman visitors do not have: a day that had nothing to do with beaches. That variety is part of what makes 10 days feel complete in a way that shorter trips do not.

One practical note: the convoy timing is fixed and cannot be changed by individual tour operators. If you miss the morning convoy, you cannot do Baratang that day. This means hotel pickup at 3:30 AM is not optional; it is the only way the trip works. Plan Day 2 (Port Blair sightseeing) as a lighter day so you can be in bed early for the 3:00 AM wake-up on Day 3.
