For repeat visitors and those who have already done the standard circuit. Long Island, specifically Lalaji Bay and Merk Bay is one of the least visited and most rewarding beaches in the Andamans. The island is accessible by government ferry from Neil Island (via Havelock) and has almost none of the tourist infrastructure of Havelock. A Barren Island volcano cruise can be added from Port Blair as a private day charter (advance booking required, roughly 10-15 days out). The pace is slower and the crowds are thinner throughout.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: The North Andaman Expedition (10 Nights / 11 Days)

Day 1: Arrive Port Blair

Fly into Veer Savarkar International Airport. Transfer to the hotel. Aberdeen Bazaar and Marine Hill are the main hotel zones, 15-20 minutes from the airport. The first day is buffer. Corbyn’s Cove Beach is 8 km from the city centre and makes for a good evening walk. Dinner at one of the seafood places along Aberdeen Bazaar. Early night. Day 5 needs a 4:30 AM wake-up.

Overnight: Port Blair

Day 2: Cellular Jail, Ross Island, North Bay Island

Cellular Jail opens at 9 AM. Allow two hours. The Light and Sound Show in the evening runs at 6 PM (Hindi) and 7:15 PM (English). know that timings vary by season, confirm at the jail ticket counter. The afternoon is for Ross Island and North Bay Island by boat from Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex. Government ferries leave at 10:30 AM and 2 PM. Glass-bottom boat rides and sea walking at North Bay Island. The deer and peacocks that now wander the ruins at Ross Island are genuinely unexpected.

Overnight: Port Blair

Day 3: Neil Island

Take the 6:30 AM ferry from Phoenix Bay Jetty. Journey time is 90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on vessel. Green Ocean and Coastal Cruise are faster than the government ferry. Arrive Neil by 9-9:30 AM. Check in. Laxmanpur Beach (Beach 1) in the afternoon. Neil is slower and quieter than Havelock, and that is its appeal. Dinner at any of the small restaurants near the jetty or in Neil Kendra market.

Day 4: Neil Island: Bharatpur, Natural Bridge, Laxmanpur 2

Bharatpur Beach in the morning. The coral close to shore is accessible without a boat. Swim out 20-30 metres and the reef begins. Natural Bridge (locally Howrah Bridge) is a 10-minute walk from Bharatpur. The rock formation has eroded since the 2004 tsunami but remains worth seeing. Laxmanpur Beach 2 in the evening for sunset. It’s less crowded than Laxmanpur 1 and the colours are typically better due to the beach’s unobstructed western horizon.

Day 5: Baratang Island: Limestone Caves and Mangrove Creek

Take the 6 AM ferry from Neil to Port Blair. Arrive around 9 AM. Head directly to the Andaman Trunk Road convoy point. The convoy to Baratang departs at 9:30 AM (the 5:30 AM convoy is already gone by the time you arrive from Neil, so the 9:30 AM is your slot). The 100 km convoy drive through the Jarawa Reserve Forest takes about 90 minutes and no stopping, no photographs in the forest zone, no open windows. Reach Baratang Town by 11 AM. A motorboat from the jetty takes you through narrow mangrove channels. The limestone caves are a 15-minute walk from the boat landing. Inside the caves, the stalactite formations drip slowly and the air is cool. The mud volcano at Baratang Town (15 km further) is an optional stop if you have time before the return convoy. Return convoy departs Baratang at 4 PM. Back in Port Blair by 7 PM.

Day 6: Drive Port Blair to Diglipur

Leave Port Blair by 7-8 AM for the 310 km drive to Diglipur. The road goes via Baratang (you pass through familiar territory from yesterday), Rangat, Mayabunder, and Aerial Bay before reaching Diglipur. Total journey time is 7-8 hours by private cab (Rs. 6,000-8,000) or 8-9 hours by government bus. You arrive Diglipur by mid-to-late afternoon. Check in near Kalipur Beach for proximity to the next two days. The drive is long but the landscape shifts dramatically as you move north. The vegetation gets denser, the settlements smaller, and the road quieter.

Day 7: Ross and Smith Islands: Sandbar Walk

Boat from Aerial Bay Jetty to Ross and Smith Islands (30-45 minutes, depending on sea conditions). These two islands are joined by a natural sandbar that surfaces at low tide and disappears when the tide rises. Walk across from Ross Island to Smith Island on wet sand with turquoise water on both sides. This visual is one of the most distinctive in the entire Andaman chain. Timing depends on the day’s tidal cycle; confirm the low-tide window with the Aerial Bay boat operators before boarding. Snorkeling between the two islands is excellent. Book the boat through your accommodation the night before.

Day 8: Kalipur Beach: Turtle Beach and Saddle Peak

Kalipur Beach is where leatherback sea turtles come ashore to nest between December and March. If your trip falls in that window, the forest department at Kalipur manages night watching; enquire locally the evening before. Even outside nesting season, Kalipur is one of the emptiest and most striking beaches in the Andamans. Its rough sand, uninhabited islands across the water, almost no other tourists. Day 9: Diglipur to Havelock: The Long Day

Leave Diglipur by 6 AM. The drive back to Port Blair takes 7-8 hours; you arrive around 1-2 PM. From Phoenix Bay Jetty, take the Green Ocean or Coastal Cruise ferry to Havelock. Departures typically at 2-3 PM, arriving Havelock by 4:30-5:30 PM. This is a long day with a road journey and a sea crossing. Pack food for the drive, and book the Havelock ferry in advance. You arrive tired but the evening on Havelock and a quieter sunset walk on Kala Pathar Beach is a real decompression after nine days of itinerary.

Day 10: Radhanagar Beach Sunrise: The Finale

Wake at 5:30 AM. Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is 12 km from the Havelock jetty area. It is about 25 minutes by auto or a rented scooter. Sunrise at Radhanagar hits between 5:45 and 6:15 AM depending on the season. After nine days that have included limestone caves, a long road to the north, a sandbar walk, a turtle beach, and a 14-hour travel day, sitting on Asia’s finest beach at first light is the right note to end on. Stay for the morning. Go to Elephant Beach in the afternoon for the best accessible snorkeling on Havelock or sea walking at Neil’s Cove for non-swimmers. Scuba diving at sites like Lighthouse or Barracuda City if prebooked.

Day 11: Morning on Havelock, Return to Port Blair, Departure

Final morning. Kala Pathar Beach is 45 minutes’ walk from the main jetty area or a 10-minute auto ride. A good early morning walk before check-out. What You Can See and Do in 11 Days in Andaman

South Andaman

Cellular Jail is the historical centrepiece of Port Blair. Takes two hours minimum so book the evening Light and Sound Show in advance. Ross Island gives you British-era ruins and wandering deer in one 40-minute boat ride. North Bay Island has coral accessible by glass-bottom boat or sea walking. Chidiya Tapu at South Andaman’s southern tip is the best sunset point near Port Blair and the best birding spot on the island.

Middle Andaman: Baratang Island

The limestone caves require the 5:30 AM or 9:30 AM convoy, there is no other way in. The mangrove creek boat ride is genuinely worth it regardless of the caves. The mud volcano at Baratang Town is worth adding if you have the afternoon for it. The drive through the Jarawa Reserve Forest is unlike anything else on the islands.

North Andaman: Diglipur

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Bharatpur for snorkeling. Laxmanpur 1 and 2 for sunsets. Natural Bridge for a short walk. Neil is the quietest of the three main islands and the right place to decompress before the Diglipur road journey.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Diglipur (North Andaman)

Accommodation in Diglipur is more limited than in the south. Pristine Beach Resort at Kalipur is the most convenient for the beaches and Ross and Smith boat access. Government tourist bungalows through the A&N Tourism Department are functional. Budget guesthouses in Diglipur town are clean and adequate. The modest accommodation in North Andaman is by design, the experience here is outdoors, not in a resort.

Why the Last Two Days of an 11-Day Andaman Trip Matter Most

Most itinerary write-ups focus on what you will see. This one focuses on something that rarely gets written about: what the ending of a trip does to your experience of it.

An 11-day Andaman itinerary that includes North Andaman has a natural rhythm problem. Days 6 through 9 are the hardest; the long drive to Diglipur, the remote beaches, the modest accommodation, the 14-hour Day 9 travel marathon from Diglipur to Havelock. If the trip ends there, it ends on effort. And that is not the right note.

The reason Package 2 (the North Andaman Expedition) is sequenced the way it is because Baratang on Day 5, Diglipur from Days 6-8, and then Havelock for Days 9-10 is that Havelock functions as the reward. You have earned it. Eleven days into a trip that included a Jarawa Forest convoy, a 310 km road journey, a tide-dependent sandbar walk on Ross and Smith Islands, and an early morning at Kalipur Beach, arriving at Radhanagar Beach at sunrise on Day 10 lands differently than it would have on Day 2.

Radhanagar at 6 AM is quieter than Radhanagar at 4 PM. The beach empties out. The light is low and warm. The sea is calm. You have context for why this beach is extraordinary.  You have spent the past four days on beaches that are objectively emptier and more remote, and yet Radhanagar is still better. That comparison is only available to someone who has done the circuit properly.

This is also why the Day 9 travel marathon. Diglipur to Port Blair to Havelock in a single day and is worth doing rather than breaking into two days. If you overnight in Port Blair on Night 9 and go to Havelock on Day 10, you lose the Radhanagar sunrise to a ferry arrival. You would reach Radhanagar by 11 AM at the earliest, in the full midday heat with other tourists already established on the sand. The sunrise requires being on Havelock the night before. Day 9 is long and tiring, but it is the correct trade.

The Elephant Beach afternoon on Day 10 matters for similar reasons. Elephant Beach has the best accessible snorkeling on Havelock. Witness shallow coral, clear water, visible fish from the surface. After nine days that have included limestone caves, Jarawa forest, a sandbar between two uninhabited islands, and a remote turtle beach, the underwater world at Elephant Beach is not an afterthought. It is a full stop.

A final practical note: the Radhanagar sunrise requires a scooter or auto booked the night before. The beach is 12 km from the main jetty area. Best Time for an 11-Day Andaman Trip

October to May is the standard advice, and it holds. November to February is peak season. Expect higher hotel rates, Makruzz seats selling out 2-3 weeks out, and crowds at Radhanagar. December to February is turtle nesting season at Kalipur. If that experience is part of why you chose 11 days and North Andaman, plan the trip for this window.

March to May is the sweet spot for most 11-day packages: good weather, lower peak pricing, most ferries running well. The Ross and Smith sandbar and the Aerial Bay boats are reliable in this season. June to September is monsoon. North Andaman boat services become unreliable from June onwards; the Baratang convoy runs but sometimes with delays. An 11-day package including Diglipur should not be planned for July or August without accepting the risk of disruption.

How to Reach Andaman

All flights land at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. Direct routes run from Chennai (1 hour 45 minutes), Kolkata (2 hours), Delhi (3 hours 15 minutes), Bengaluru (2 hours 30 minutes), and Hyderabad (2 hours 30 minutes). IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Vistara operate these routes. Book 4-6 weeks in advance for peak season travel.

Ships from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam (operated by the Shipping Corporation of India) reach Port Blair in 55-70 hours depending on the port. Cabins need to be booked well in advance. Sea travel is cheaper and suits those with flexible time.

Permits and Entry Requirements

Indian nationals require no special permit for Port Blair, Neil Island, Havelock Island, Baratang Island, or Diglipur. The convoy through the Jarawa Reserve Forest to Baratang involves a mandatory forest department registration at the Port Blair convoy point. This is handled at the roadhead and is not a separate permit process.

Foreign nationals visiting Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil do not require a Restricted Area Permit. Nicobar Islands (not part of standard itineraries) require special permits. Diglipur and Ross and Smith Islands are open to all visitors without additional permits.
